    Which Amp? Empty Which Amp?

    Post  johzel April 26th 2010, 8:29 am

So, my search for a amp to match the Magnepan 1.7 speakers continues. The speakers require high current 4-ohm power.

Here are my finalists to date (in no particular order) but all similar in price:

    Creek 5350 Integrated
    Rotel RB-1552/RC-1550 Amp/Preamp
    Parasound Halo A23/P3 Amp/Preamp
    Onix RA-125 Integrated

    Any other recomendations?

Now I just have to sell my NAD C355BEE integrated and/or my Onix H34 tube amps.

Both are still available to the first good offer Wink Although, I do have trade offers on the Creek, Rotel and Parasound amps.

Yes, I know Hugh and company, I should get the Onix!! Laughing

I am not really familiar with all the different combos you have but I have a Rotel integrated now and I absolutely LOVE its sound. Its not in the same league as the ones you are looking at but it still is fantastic. I am absolutely thrilled with the sound coming from it. It is a bit on the "warmer" side of sound, which I like.

That said, I've heard nothing but good things about the Parasound Halo gear and the Onix looks fantastic as well.

Sorry I couldn't be much help but it looks like you've got a good predicament to be in cheers

I think I may be depressed (just kidding, besides, psychologists never diagnose themselves - or aren't supposed to!!) . . . so anyway, I'm reading reviews of my amplifier short list today and come up with a new term for me, "mid fi" . . . and here I thought my new hobby was "hi fi". Boy, what a disappointment. Well, at least I'm not in the really unenviable almost 3rd world second class "lo fi" category . . . . Us (or is it "we") golfers can always compare ourselves through the USGA handicap system. For example, I'm an "8". Maybe the audio industry should devise a similar system to distinguish a person's relative low-mid-hi fi status. We could base it on 100 . . . currently I'm a 47 but if Hugh comes through with some great new equipment and prices I'm hoping to become a 92 . . . . take that you wannabe 91's . . . .

I know, time for the retired guy to get a job and get off the forums . . . Laughing

For the Parasound line, the A21 would be a better amp then the A23. But if you really want high current ..... JC-1s are usually floating around.

I'm sure that's the case given their relative prices. As per Audio Advisor the A21 costs $2299 and the A23 $949. Will have to look at the JC-1. Thanks.

If a concern is money, don't look towards the JC-1s. But you can find an A21 used for $1200-1400.

I'll have one up on A'gon soon.

Long story. Have NAD that's relatively new and didn't want hassle of selling, boxing, shipping etc. So, the store where I bought it gave me credit toward another product. Given what they sell, I thought the Parasound Combo (A23/P3) was my best option at their shop relative to my budget and the Maggies. No one else was too interested in the trade . . . so that was the basis of my decision. Otherwise, I would have bought the Onix. I think the Xia-160 would have been a great match for the Maggies. And now, I've expanded my speaker list to include the N3's from Fallen (and company) depending upon their production schedule and Walter Liederman has me interested in the Emerald Physics CS3's. My budget keeps getting stretched. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
