Interesting.... Looks like an enlarged Ref 100 cabinet, with a Vifa tweeter and the 7" Atohm drivers from a Ref 3.

Is this speaker going to be able like the AV123 X-CS (I believe) to also function as L-R mains. The reason I ask I was surprised when Mark told me he had used his as mains. My question had been the same as to you, i.e., if it could function as mains because it was not "ported" and was a "sealed" enclosure which meant that it was designed to be placed closer to the back wall (or a tv, whatever), and that was important because our listening room was small and I couldn't allow main speakers to be pulled out 2-3-4 feet into the room. Just curious. If the answer is positive, that would be an additional good selling point for these speakers. Good luck. Larry

Larry,
They are rear ported.

There are both ported and sealed designs that can be used as mains. It's just one of many design decisions. The only downside of the X-CS as mains was that they didn't have quite the bass extension as the ported versions. Of course, these were designed to be budget speakers, and there are always cost trade-offs to be made there. Also, many center channels are ported, like these.
In the case of Hugh's new LCR's, they were specifically designed to function as center/left/right. I don't have the final specs yet, but they are ported speakers that should have pretty decent low end oomph given the 7" atohm drivers. Plus, the front three will match perfectly, which is important for a seamless front stage. Should have most of the Ref 3 sound for 2-channel and be MUCH better than the old Ref 100 for HT. I'm looking forward to my turn to demo them!

Hugh can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Ref 3's woofers are 7 inchers. The old Ref 100 used the smaller drivers from the Ref 1's and 2's. Should be a nice upgrade. The importance of the NoRez should not be underestimated either - especially when using as a center channel.

No pricing defined yet and we're looking at 5 months from now for full scale production delivery, providing there will not be any major rework.
I may come up with a tower later this year and then next year will a flagship model.
Thanks,

Yes Sir.
Actually, instead of maximizing profits by using 'inexpensive' parts, I aim for the least amount of profit for the most bang for your buck.
Will see if I'll lose my shirt on this.

Hi Hugh,
Since I'm already 1 for 1 on the tweeter and drivers, I'm going with my crystal ball and I'm going to guess the innards with the focus on bang-for-buck:
1) NoRez (I know you gave that one away already)
2) Danny Richie designed 2nd order XO
3) Sonicap with a G2 bypass cap on the tweeter circuit
4) Erse Pulse X cap on the driver circuit with a G2 bypass cap
5) Inductors and resistors will be the standard type for cost reasons
6) The tweeter circuit will be designed to cross over somewhere around 1900 to 2000 Hz
7) +/- 3dB point of 35 Hz
How am I doing?
B
