I started last year - March 23rd!
A few years after my wife and I got married, around 1986, we took out a Whole Life Policy on her, and a few years later another one on me. We always made the payments, but never checked the investment portion of them to see how they were doing. We weren't active with it.
Turns out that after more than twenty years, the "investment" grew very little. I felt cheated. The amount in our accounts wasn't any where near what the amortization sheets showed. With the decline of the market through 2008, that's what made me even look at those accounts at all. In October 2008, I changed all the accounts over to cash. I estimate we lost between twenty and thirty percent.
I closed all my John Hancock accounts and moved them all into my own Ameritrade accounts. I spent some time learning about different investments, and on March 23rd 2009 I jumped into the market with both feet. Over the course of 2009, I made all that we had lost back again. The choices I made in March of 2009 seemed very easy then. I saw so many good companies that were bargains to buy, I wished I had a million dollars! It really was very clear to me what to do.
But now, it's not so easy to decide on what to buy or when to buy or sell.
